Kuala Muda Bakas

On the 7th January 2009, our group from Kuala Muda had the oppurtunity of going to Hospital Sungai Petani for the purpose of food sampling.
We gathered in the hospital cafeteria at 9.00 a.m.
Upon arrival, we were given a brief lecture by Mr. Azmi, Mr. Asif and Mr. Firdauz. Before taking food samples, certain precautions have to be taken to prevent contamination of the samples.

Procedure :

1. To introduce yourself to the shop owner and present identification badge for verification
2. Explain purpose of sampling
3. Gloves and face mask have to be worn before obtaining samples.
4. Random food samples were taken.
In the canteen, we took rice, egg tauhu, chickan curry and vegetable
5. Temperature of the foods to be obtained for sample was first taken using an infra-red thermometer
6. Food samples were then individually packed in a special seal plastic bag. Air is removed before sealing the bag.
7. The samples were the taged with individual identification number.
8. The samples were the placed in another plastic bag and into the cooler box filled wih ice for microbiological investigations.
9. Samples that were taken have to be paid for and a official reciept have to be taken

If the foods were found to be contaminated, a fine of RM 2,000 to a maximum of RM 10,000 can be issued.

For hospital canteens and other institutions and school canteens, the scoring for premise cleanliness have to be >70%


At 2.30 p.m, we had a meeting with the BAKAS unit head by Mr.Kamaruddin who brief us on the various aspects of BAKAS.

BAKAS - Bekalan Air dan Kebersihan Alam Sekitar

1.Monitoring the quality and ensuring safe water supply in the rural areas.
2.Monitoring and protection of the environmental health.
3.Monitoring and providing a proper system of solid waste disposal.
4.Monitoring and ensure a proper system of water drainage.

BAKAS is the continuation of activities that started in the 1960s. It is among the various health programes that emphasises on the importance of prevention in the spread of water bourne diseases by increasing the health status of the rural community with proper water supply and clean sanitation and waste disposal.
Since the introduction of BAKAS, the incidence of water bourne diseases in Kedah;cholera, typhoid etc..., have decrease significantly

Its objective :
-to prevent the occurance of diseases due to unhygenic water supply and improper sewage system especially in the rural areas.

1. To provide 100% safe water supply
2. To provide 100% clean and proper sanitation supply

Component :

1.Proper water system - paip connection system by KKM/JKR
- GFS ( system bekalan air gravity )
- "system tadahan air hujan"

2. Proper sanitation system - Flush toilet system
- SPAL, system pelupusan air limpah
- SPSP, system pelepusan sisa pepejal (solid waste disposal)


Borang Pemohonan, Application Letter

Upon completition of the application letter, the health inspector will visit the house twice, first visit is directly after recieving the letter and the second visit is after the subsidi was given to the applicant. Annual visits of 2-3x/year will also be done to update informations on the houses and for early detection of any outbreaks.
The application is only applied to those with income below Rm 750.
Rm 500 subsidi is given to the applicant for the consruction of a toilet outside the house which will be connected to the 'kok' via a paip.
